How to Get a Refund — Step by Step
- 1To exchange a ticket: log into your Megabus account at us.megabus.com and go to 'Manage Booking.'
- 2Select the reservation you want to change and choose a new departure date or time on the same route.
- 3Pay the applicable exchange fee: $3.00 for changes made more than 24 hours before departure, $5.00 for changes 6–24 hours before departure, or $7.50 for changes 3–6 hours before departure.
- 4If the new trip costs more than the original, pay the fare difference at checkout.
- 5For Megabus-cancelled services: if Megabus cancels your trip less than 14 days before travel, you will be offered a choice between alternative travel arrangements on a different Megabus service or a full refund of your fare and transaction fees.
- 6To request a refund for a Megabus-cancelled trip: contact customer service at 1-877-462-6342 or email questions@us.megabus.com.
- 7For complaints or unresolved issues: use the contact form at us.megabus.com/contact-us or chat with the virtual assistant 'Chuck' on the Megabus website.
When You Can Get a Refund
- All Megabus reservations are considered final sale — you cannot cancel a reservation and receive a refund.
- Refunds are only available when Megabus cancels or withdraws a service for reasons within its control and the cancellation occurs less than 14 days before the travel date.
- Megabus is not responsible for delays or cancellations caused by traffic, road conditions, weather, or other causes beyond its control — no refund is issued in these cases.
- Tickets can be exchanged (not refunded) for a different departure time or date on the same route, up to 3 hours before the original scheduled departure.
- Route changes are not allowed during a ticket exchange — you can only change the date or time.
- If the new ticket costs more than the original, you must pay the difference (this amount is non-refundable); if it costs less, you do not receive a credit for the difference.
All Refund Methods
- No refunds for customer-initiated cancellations — Megabus reservations are non-refundable once completed
- Full refund of fare and transaction fees (to original payment method) only when Megabus cancels a service less than 14 days before the travel date and you choose a refund over alternative travel
- Ticket exchange (no monetary refund): exchange your existing ticket for a different date or time on the same route, with tiered change fees
Partial Refunds
- No partial refunds are available — Megabus does not offer refunds for unused tickets or partially completed journeys.
- The booking fee (separate from the fare) is not refunded even when Megabus cancels the service — only the fare and transaction fees are refunded.
- Exchange fee differences are non-refundable: if you exchange for a cheaper trip, you do not receive the price difference back.
- In rare cases of significant service failure (e.g., bus broke down mid-journey and no replacement was provided), contact customer service to discuss compensation.
Dispute Process
- Call Megabus customer service at 1-877-462-6342 (US toll-free) to report issues or request compensation for service failures.
- For Canadian customers, call 1-866-488-4452; for Midwest routes, call 1-773-890-2051.
- Email questions@us.megabus.com with your booking reference, travel details, and a description of the issue.
- Use the online contact form at us.megabus.com/contact-us or the virtual assistant 'Chuck' for initial support.
- If Megabus does not resolve your issue within 14 days, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or the Department of Transportation's consumer complaint process.
Additional Notes
- Megabus's strict no-refund policy is one of the most restrictive in the bus travel industry — always double-check your travel dates before completing a reservation.
- Ticket exchanges are the only option for changes — and they are limited to the same route with a different date or time.
- Exchange fees increase as you get closer to departure: $3.00 (24+ hours out), $5.00 (6–24 hours), $7.50 (3–6 hours) — no changes are allowed within 3 hours of departure.
- If you miss your bus (no-show), the ticket is forfeited with no refund or exchange option.
- Megabus may alter timetables, suspend, or cancel services at any time — if the cancellation is within Megabus's control and less than 14 days out, you get a refund option.
- Consider purchasing travel insurance separately if you need cancellation protection — Megabus does not offer its own cancellation insurance.
- Peter Pan Bus Lines (a Megabus partner) may have slightly different exchange policies for shared routes — check peterpanbus.com for those specific terms.
