Walmart Holiday Extension

Items purchased October 1 through December 31 can be returned through January 31. Exceptions: wireless phones, major appliances, and some premium items (e.g., Dyson) still follow their standard shorter windows.

Target Holiday Extension

Items purchased November 1 through December 24: return window starts December 26. Apple/Beats and mobile phones: returnable through January 9. Standard electronics and Target Plus items: returnable through January 24. Exclusion: seasonal holiday decor from Target Plus partners is not eligible for holiday extension.

Return Conditions

Walmart

  • Most items can be returned within 90 days of purchase for a full refund or exchange
  • Items must be in original condition with packaging, accessories, manuals, and tags
  • Receipt, order confirmation email, or valid government-issued photo ID required
  • Without receipt: present driver's license — system checks ID against a secured return database
  • Without receipt: even exchange or Walmart gift card at item's current lowest selling price (cash if under $10)
  • Items purchased from dealers/resellers (not Walmart directly) are not eligible
  • Clothing must be unworn, unwashed, with original tags
  • Electronics must be factory reset with all personal data erased
  • Assembled items (furniture, grills, bikes) must be fully disassembled and repackaged
  • Bundles and tech sets require all components returned together

Target

  • Most unopened items sold by Target in new condition can be returned within 90 days of purchase (in-store) or invoice date (online)
  • Target Circle Card (formerly RedCard) and Circle 360 members receive an extra 30 days on most items (120 days total)
  • Target-owned brands (Cat & Jack, Up & Up, Good & Gather, All in Motion, etc.) have a 365-day return window with valid proof of purchase
  • Items should be in original packaging with accessories, manuals, and tags
  • Apparel must be unworn, unwashed, with original tags intact
  • Beauty products (opened makeup and skincare) are accepted within the standard window with proof of purchase
  • Opened music, movies, and video games cannot be refunded but can be exchanged for the exact same title
  • Registry items (baby, wedding) can be returned within 1 year of the event date
  • EBT purchases have a 90-day window from ship/delivery date for items purchased with SNAP EBT online

Walmart

  • Major appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers): 2 days — report damage within 48 hours; cannot return in-store
  • Wireless phones (prepaid and postpaid): 14 days — factory reset and remove personal data
  • Marketplace luxury items (jewelry, watches, apparel, art over $300): 14 days
  • Marketplace collectibles (trading cards, memorabilia): 14 days
  • Consumer electronics (TVs, laptops, tablets, cameras, drones, consoles): 30 days — include all cords, remotes, packaging
  • Electric bicycles: 30 days

  • Prescription glasses, contacts, eyewear: 60 days

  • Firearms, ammunition, pepper spray, airsoft/BB guns, crossbows: non-returnable

  • Diabetes supplies, pregnancy/ovulation/COVID tests: non-returnable

  • Electronics and entertainment items (excluding Apple & Beats): 30-day return window
  • All Apple and Beats products (including mobile phones): 14-day return window
  • Mobile phones (unlocked/prepaid): 14-day return window; carrier-contracted phones may incur early termination fees plus a $35 restocking fee
  • Target Plus (third-party marketplace) items: 30-day return window; cannot use Drive Up for returns; fragrances from Target Plus are non-returnable
  • Target GiftCards, specialty gift cards, and prepaid cards: not returnable
  • Trading cards and collectibles: not returnable
  • Personalized/custom items: not returnable

Refund Methods

Walmart

  • Cash or check: immediate refund in-store
  • Walmart gift card / Walmart Balance: within 3 hours
  • Walmart Cash: within 3 hours
  • EBT / SNAP card: within 3 hours
  • Debit card (with PIN): up to 7 business days
  • Credit card: up to 10 business days
  • PayPal: up to 30 business days (depends on bank)
  • Without receipt: gift card at current lowest selling price

Target

  • Original payment method (default for all returns with receipt)
  • Merchandise return card (Target gift card) for returns without proof of purchase
  • Cash refund: immediate (in-store)
  • Merchandise return card: immediate (in-store)
  • Target Circle Card (RedCard): 1-2 business days
  • Third-party credit/debit card: up to 5 business days
  • Mail-in returns: additional 7-10 business days processing at Online Return Center

Online / Mail Returns

Walmart

  • Log in to Walmart.com or app → Purchase History → select item → 'Start a return'
  • Choose refund or replacement, then method: mail-in, curbside, or in-store drop-off
  • Print shipping label or generate mobile barcode for Mobile Express Returns
  • Some items qualify for 'keep it' refunds — refund without requiring physical return
  • Outbound shipping fees and freight surcharges are generally non-refundable
  • Cancelling before shipment releases the authorization hold immediately
  • Mail returns discontinued for furniture, mattresses, and large appliances — use in-store or scheduled pickup

Target

  • Free mail-in returns with prepaid shipping label
  • Processing takes 7-10 business days after the Online Return Center receives the item
  • Drive Up returns available through the Target app — initiate in the app and you have 7 days to complete the return
  • Target Plus (marketplace) items cannot be returned via Drive Up
  • Large items (furniture, large electronics) may qualify for return pickup instead of standard mail

In-Store Returns

Walmart

  • Bring item, packaging, and receipt to Customer Service desk at any Walmart store nationwide
  • Without receipt: present valid government-issued photo ID
  • Items with rechargeable batteries, freight/oversized items, major appliances, and Marketplace luxury goods cannot be returned in-store
  • Store manager has final decision-making authority on all returns

Target

  • Bring item and proof of purchase to Guest Services counter
  • Refund issued immediately to original payment method with receipt or linked card
  • Without proof of purchase, merchandise return card issued at lowest recent selling price (approximately $100 limit per 365-day period, verified by government-issued ID)
  • Target can look up purchases using the payment card used or Target Circle account

Gift Returns

Walmart

  • Gift returns accepted without receipt — present valid photo ID
  • Refund issued as Walmart gift card at current lowest selling price
  • Gift receipts can be requested at time of purchase for easier recipient returns
  • During holiday season (Oct 1-Dec 31), extended window through January 31 applies

Target

  • Gift receipts accepted — refund issued as a Target GiftCard
  • Registry items can be returned within 1 year of the event date
  • Without a gift receipt, a merchandise return card is issued at the lowest recent selling price

Membership Benefits

Walmart

  • Walmart+ members: free home pickup returns — schedule via app, driver picks up from doorstep, no printing/boxing required
  • Walmart+ members: $29.99 large item pickup fee waived for furniture, mattresses, large appliances
  • Curbside returns available for all customers — check in via app, park in pickup spot, associate retrieves item from your car

Target

  • Target Circle Card (formerly RedCard) holders get an extra 30 days on the standard return window (120 days total for most items)

Damaged or Defective Items

Walmart

  • Damaged/defective items: full refund or replacement in-store or by mail
  • Major appliances: must report damage within 48 hours
  • Walmart monitors returns for fraud — excessive abuse may result in refund delays, account flagging, or recharge penalties
  • Always document the issue when initiating the return in the app or with an associate

Target

  • Defective items can be returned within the applicable return window for a full refund or exchange
  • Shipping fees are refunded if the item was defective or if Target made an error
  • Large defective items (furniture, TVs) may qualify for return pickup service

Price Adjustments

Walmart

  • No formal post-purchase price adjustment policy
  • Walmart matches Walmart.com prices in-store at time of purchase only

Target

  • Target offers price adjustments within 14 days of purchase if the item drops in price at Target.com, the Target app, or a local Target store
  • As of July 28, 2025, Target eliminated competitor price matching — only Target-to-Target price adjustments are honored
  • As of January 15, 2026, Target Circle deals can be combined with price matches (lower matched price plus Circle discount)
  • Price adjustments can be requested in-store at Guest Services or online through customer service

Exchange Policy

Walmart

  • Even exchanges available in-store for identical items
  • For a different item, return the original and make a new purchase

Target

  • Exchanges available in-store for most items within the return window
  • Opened music, movies, and video games can only be exchanged for the exact same title
  • Online purchases can be exchanged in-store

  • No restocking fees on items sold directly by Walmart; Marketplace sellers may charge up to 20%
