How to Cancel — Step by Step
- 1Call OnStar at 1-888-466-7827 (1-888-4ONSTAR) — the line is available 24/7.
- 2Alternatively, press the blue OnStar button in your vehicle to connect with an Advisor.
- 3Request cancellation and provide your account details (name, phone number, vehicle VIN).
- 4Be firm about canceling — OnStar retention agents will offer discounts and plan downgrades to keep you; politely decline if you wish to proceed.
- 5Ask for a confirmation email to verify the cancellation has been processed.
- 6Confirm the effective date — services typically continue until the end of the current billing period.
- 7If applicable, request information about your prorated refund and when it will be processed.
Billed Through a Third Party?
- If OnStar services were included as part of your vehicle purchase or lease from a dealership, those prepaid plans cannot be refunded — contact the dealer about potential credits.
- If you have an OnStar data plan billed through your mobile carrier (e.g., AT&T for in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot), cancel the data portion through your carrier separately.
- Some GM dealership-bundled plans require contacting the dealership directly for modifications or early cancellation.
Reactivating Your Account
- You can reactivate OnStar at any time by calling 1-888-466-7827 or pressing the blue OnStar button.
- Vehicle diagnostic data and historical reports may not be available after cancellation.
- Remote access features (lock, unlock, remote start via app) stop immediately upon cancellation.
- Reactivation may require a new plan purchase at current pricing — grandfathered rates are not preserved.
Additional Notes
- OnStar plans range from approximately $14.99/month (Remote Access) to $39.99/month (Essentials) depending on the plan level and vehicle model year.
- No cancellation fees or early termination penalties apply to OnStar monthly subscriptions.
- After cancellation, automatic crash response and emergency SOS features are disabled — consider this for safety.
- OnStar online cancellation is limited; the most reliable method is calling 1-888-466-7827.
- Expect the retention call to take 15-30 minutes as agents offer multiple counter-offers — be patient and persistent.
- Stolen vehicle assistance requires an active OnStar subscription — without it, GM cannot locate your vehicle.
- OnStar Guardian app (for non-GM vehicles and phone-based services) has a separate subscription that must be canceled independently.
- If your vehicle has connected services features that rely on OnStar (like remote start from the myChevrolet / myGMC / myCadillac / myBuick app), those will stop working after cancellation.

Easiest way to cancel OnStar?
I gave in and signed up for a trial when I was so ready to get my EUV and drive it off the dealer's lot. Now the time has come to cancel the trial subscription, what's the easiest way to do it? It seems I have to call to cancel. Is that the only way -- to call and endure a persistent sales pitch yet
Canceled OnStar, no more app remote start, right?
Just checking. I canceled my trial OnStar subscription and now the remote start through the app is failing. I assume it’s connected, right? If so, is there any reason to keep the app?
Canceling OnStar in CA, USA.
Recently I got a subscription for the meal kit service, HelloFresh. When trying to cancel I found out that I was only able to cancel without calling because of a recent policy change in CA that says you have to make it easy and obvious to cancel, customers in other states had to call. Hi all, After owning my 2019 for a year, I finally got around to do the 3-month OnStar trial. My take is that there are only a few useful things: remote commands/status and vehicle location (to let my wife know where I'm at and vice versa). Other than those, navigation is useless, the EV Energy Assi
