How to Cancel — Step by Step

  1. 1Go to medium.com and sign in to your account.
  2. 2Click your profile picture in the bottom-left corner and select 'Settings.'
  3. 3Scroll to the 'Membership and payment' section.
  4. 4Click 'Cancel your membership.'
  5. 5Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm — Medium may present retention offers; decline to proceed.
  6. 6You will retain full member access (unlimited reads, ad-free experience) until the end of your current billing period.

Billed Through a Third Party?

  • If subscribed via Apple App Store: go to iPhone/iPad Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → find Medium → Cancel Subscription. Uninstalling the Medium app does NOT cancel your subscription — you must cancel through Apple directly.
  • If subscribed via Google Play: open Play Store → tap profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → find Medium → Cancel subscription.
  • Deleting your Medium account does NOT automatically cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription — you will continue to be charged until you cancel through the billing platform.

Reactivating Your Account

  • You can rejoin Medium membership at any time from the membership page.
  • Your profile, published stories, followers, and reading history are preserved after cancellation — only member-exclusive reading access is removed.
  • Gift memberships ($50/year, one-time charge) do not auto-renew and require no cancellation.

Additional Notes

  • Medium Member: $5/month or $50/year — unlimited ad-free access to all stories on Medium.
  • Friend of Medium: $15/month or $150/year — all Member benefits plus 4x earnings for writers you read, ability to share Friend Links that bypass paywalls.
  • Refund requests can be submitted at yourfriends.medium.com, but approval is at Medium's discretion.
  • Medium Partner Program earnings are separate from your membership and are not affected by cancellation.
  • If you write on Medium, canceling your membership does not affect your ability to publish — but you will lose access to member-only stories.
  • Medium does not offer phone support; all support is via email and help center at help.medium.com.
