Side-by-side comparison of refund processs, conditions, and refund timelines.·Last updated: 2026-03-19
Refund Conditions
Affirm
- To request a refund, you must first contact the store where you made the purchase.
- Affirm cannot issue refunds or cancellations without confirmation from the store.
- The store's own return policy determines if a return is possible and the refund amount.
- If the store provides store credit instead of a refund, you are still responsible for your Affirm payments.
- Any interest you have paid is not refundable.
Afterpay
- The merchant must process the refund in their system first.
- Returns are always subject to the merchant's refund policy, which can be found on their website or by contacting them directly.
- Always allow up to 7 calendar days for the merchant to respond to your enquiry if goods are not received.
Refund Steps
Affirm
- Contact the store directly where you made the purchase to request a refund.
- The store will inform you if a return is possible and the refund amount based on their policy.
- Once the store processes the return, they will notify Affirm.
- Affirm will then apply the refund to your loan balance, starting with the final payments.
- If you have already made payments, the amount will be refunded to your original payment method within 3-10 business days.
- You can check the status of your refund by signing into your Affirm account and selecting the purchase.
Afterpay
- Contact the merchant directly for their refund policy.
- Reach out to the merchant/seller first to find out what has happened and request tracking information if goods have not been received.
- If it has been more than 7 calendar days since the order date and you have received no response from the merchant, you can raise a dispute from your app.
- Check your emails for notifications from Afterpay, as an email is always sent to let you know a refund is on its way.
Refund Methods
Affirm
- Refund to original payment method
- Check
Afterpay
- original card used for payments
- Afterpay account
Partial Refunds
Affirm
- If a partial refund is less than your loan balance, the refund amount will be deducted from your remaining balance, potentially resulting in fewer remaining payments or a lower final payment.
- If a partial refund is greater than your loan balance, the remaining balance will be canceled, and the leftover amount will be sent to your original payment method.

Dispute Process
Affirm
- If you are unable to resolve the issue with the store, you can open a dispute with Affirm.
Afterpay
- If goods haven't been received and the merchant has not responded within 7 calendar days of contact, a dispute can be raised from the app.
- Once a full dispute has been raised, a second dispute for the same order cannot be raised.
- For some merchants (e.g., Prezzee for Gift Cards), you must contact them directly for help and cannot raise a dispute.
- A dispute can be canceled via the app if goods are delivered or a refund is received from the store after the dispute was raised.
Additional Notes
Affirm
- While waiting for your refund, you should continue to make any payments that are due to avoid them becoming overdue.
- It can take 21 days or longer for a store to process a return and for Affirm to update your account.
Afterpay
- Some merchants, such as those selling gift cards (e.g., Prezzee), require you to contact them directly for help, and disputes may not be able to be raised.
- Once a full dispute has been raised, you will not be able to raise a second dispute for the same order.
- If goods are delivered or a refund is received from the store after raising a dispute, you can notify Afterpay to cancel the dispute via your app.
