How to Get a Refund — Step by Step
- 1Review your credit card statement for any errors or unusual activity, such as double charges or unrecognized transactions.
- 2Contact the retailer or merchant where the charge originated to try and resolve the issue directly.
- 3If you cannot resolve the issue with the merchant, contact Discover to formally dispute the charge.
- 4You can submit a dispute notice online at discover.com/billingerrornotice or by writing to Discover, PO Box 30421, Salt Lake City, UT 84130-0421.
- 5In your communication, provide your name, account number, the dollar amount of the suspected error, and a description of the problem.
- 6Be patient while the charge is under review and respond quickly to any messages from Discover to help speed up the process.
When You Can Get a Refund
- For issues with the quality of goods or services, you must first make a good-faith effort to correct the problem with the merchant.
- Disputable charges include billing errors, unauthorized or fraudulent transactions, and issues with goods or services that were never delivered or not as agreed.
- For disputes regarding the quality of goods or services, the purchase must have been for more than $50 and made in your home state or within 100 miles of your mailing address, with some exceptions.
- Cardmembers have a $0 Fraud Liability Guarantee for unauthorized purchases.
Dispute Process
- While a charge is being investigated, you do not have to pay the disputed amount or any associated interest or fees, but you are still responsible for the remainder of your balance.
- Discover cannot try to collect the amount in question or report you as delinquent on that amount during the investigation.
- If the dispute is resolved in your favor, a permanent credit (chargeback) will be applied to your account.
- If the investigation finds the charge is valid, it will be reapplied to your account, and you will be responsible for payment.
Additional Notes
- Discover cardmembers are protected with a $0 Fraud Liability Guarantee, meaning you are never responsible for unauthorized purchases on your card.
- The Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA) is a federal law that protects credit card customers from being held responsible for certain charges and outlines the dispute process.
- You can log into your online account to find a transaction and select “Dispute Charge” to open an inquiry.
