Return Conditions
Target
- Most unopened items sold by Target in new condition can be returned within 90 days of purchase (in-store) or invoice date (online)
- Target Circle Card (formerly RedCard) and Circle 360 members receive an extra 30 days on most items (120 days total)
- Target-owned brands (Cat & Jack, Up & Up, Good & Gather, All in Motion, etc.) have a 365-day return window with valid proof of purchase
- Items should be in original packaging with accessories, manuals, and tags
- Apparel must be unworn, unwashed, with original tags intact
- Beauty products (opened makeup and skincare) are accepted within the standard window with proof of purchase
- Opened music, movies, and video games cannot be refunded but can be exchanged for the exact same title
- Registry items (baby, wedding) can be returned within 1 year of the event date
- EBT purchases have a 90-day window from ship/delivery date for items purchased with SNAP EBT online
Amazon
- Most items sold and shipped by Amazon can be returned within 30 days of delivery
- Items should be in new, unused condition and in original packaging for a full refund
- Used or damaged returns may result in a partial refund or restocking fee (20-50% depending on condition and product type)
- No paper receipt required — Amazon tracks all orders in your account under 'Your Orders'
- Apparel and shoes must be unworn, unwashed, and have original tags attached
- Electronics must include all original packaging, manuals, cables, chargers, and accessories — missing components may result in partial refund
- You have an additional 15 days to ship items back after a return is approved, even if the 30-day window has closed

Target
- Electronics and entertainment items (excluding Apple & Beats): 30-day return window
- All Apple and Beats products (including mobile phones): 14-day return window
- Mobile phones (unlocked/prepaid): 14-day return window; carrier-contracted phones may incur early termination fees plus a $35 restocking fee
- Target Plus (third-party marketplace) items: 30-day return window; cannot use Drive Up for returns; fragrances from Target Plus are non-returnable
- Target GiftCards, specialty gift cards, and prepaid cards: not returnable
- Trading cards and collectibles: not returnable
- Personalized/custom items: not returnable
- Digital downloads and activation codes: not returnable
- Opened/unsealed breast pumps: not returnable
- International purchases: not returnable
- No restocking fees on general merchandise, apparel, or standard electronics (except noted mobile phone fee)
- Coupon purchases: only out-of-pocket amount refunded; coupon value is forfeited
- Circle Card extension does not apply to Target Plus items, mobile phones, or Apple/Beats products

- Baby items (non-registry): 90-day return window
- Baby Registry gifts: 365-day return window with free returns
- Wedding Registry gifts: 180-day return window
- Birthday Gift List items: 90-day return window
- Mattresses (excluding crib mattresses): 100-day return window; unboxed and expanded mattresses typically cannot be physically returned but a refund is usually issued within the window

- Subscribe & Save: first delivery returnable under standard policy; subsequent deliveries typically non-returnable unless defective. Subscriptions can be cancelled or skipped at any time before shipment
- Restocking fees: up to 15% if item condition is misrepresented or original packaging is missing; 20-50% range possible for used electronics returns
- Amazon introduced a returns processing fee in 2024 for products with high return rates (all categories except apparel and shoes)
Refund Methods
Target
- Original payment method (default for all returns with receipt)
- Merchandise return card (Target gift card) for returns without proof of purchase

Online / Mail Returns
Target
- Free mail-in returns with prepaid shipping label
- Processing takes 7-10 business days after the Online Return Center receives the item
- Drive Up returns available through the Target app — initiate in the app and you have 7 days to complete the return
- Target Plus (marketplace) items cannot be returned via Drive Up
- Large items (furniture, large electronics) may qualify for return pickup instead of standard mail
Amazon
- Go to 'Your Orders' on Amazon.com or the Amazon app
- Select 'Return or Replace Items' next to the order
- Choose return reason and select drop-off or shipping method

In-Store Returns
Target
- Bring item and proof of purchase to Guest Services counter
- Refund issued immediately to original payment method with receipt or linked card
- Without proof of purchase, merchandise return card issued at lowest recent selling price (approximately $100 limit per 365-day period, verified by government-issued ID)
- Target can look up purchases using the payment card used or Target Circle account
Amazon
- Amazon does not have its own traditional retail stores for general returns
- Whole Foods Market locations accept Amazon returns — box-free, label-free with QR code
- Amazon Fresh stores accept returns — box-free, label-free with QR code
- Kohl's locations accept Amazon returns and provide Kohl's Cash as a thank-you incentive

Gift Returns
Target

Damaged or Defective Items
Target
- Defective items can be returned within the applicable return window for a full refund or exchange
- Shipping fees are refunded if the item was defective or if Target made an error
- Large defective items (furniture, TVs) may qualify for return pickup service
- For recalled items, a separate recall process exists with dedicated support — check Target.com/recalls
Amazon
- Select 'Item arrived damaged/defective' when initiating the return in 'Your Orders'
- Amazon typically covers return shipping for damaged/defective items
- Replacement product may be offered instead of refund
- For Amazon-sold items, defective/damaged claims are handled directly by Amazon customer service
- For third-party seller items, contact the seller first; if unresolved, Amazon's A-to-Z Guarantee can be invoked
- Photos of damage may be requested for documentation

Price Adjustments
Target
- Target offers price adjustments within 14 days of purchase if the item drops in price at Target.com, the Target app, or a local Target store
- As of July 28, 2025, Target eliminated competitor price matching — only Target-to-Target price adjustments are honored
- As of January 15, 2026, Target Circle deals can be combined with price matches (lower matched price plus Circle discount)
- Price adjustments can be requested in-store at Guest Services or online through customer service
Amazon
- Amazon does not offer a formal post-purchase price adjustment or price protection policy
- If an item drops in price within the 30-day return window, you can return the item and repurchase at the lower price
- Some credit cards offer price protection benefits that cover Amazon purchases
- Third-party price tracking tools (CamelCamelCamel, Honey) can alert you to price drops
Exchange Policy
Target
- Exchanges available in-store for most items within the return window
- Opened music, movies, and video games can only be exchanged for the exact same title
- Online purchases can be exchanged in-store
Amazon
- Exchanges available for identical items (size/color swap) on eligible products
- Exchange option appears during the return initiation process if available for the item
- If exchange is not available, return for refund and repurchase is the standard process
