Pending Charge During a Free Trial? Check Before Seeking a Refund

Pending charge after a free trial sign-up? How to tell an authorization hold from a real subscription charge, how long holds can last, and the right first move before you dispute.

A pending charge during a free trial may be a temporary verification hold, but “pending” alone does not tell you whether it will disappear or become a subscription payment. Read the transaction status alongside the service's trial terms, billing history, and cancellation confirmation before asking for a refund.

Start with three checks:

  1. Still pending? Ask the merchant whether it is verification only or a payment being processed. For an authorized credit-card transaction, issuers such as Capital One generally require posting before accepting a billing dispute. A hold can still reduce your available credit or cash.
  2. Do you want the subscription? Cancel by the service's cutoff if you do not. A disappearing hold does not cancel the trial, and a cancellation does not necessarily remove the hold immediately.
  3. Already posted? Match the charge to its receipt and billing provider. Request a refund or correction through that provider; if an error remains unresolved, ask your issuer about a dispute.

This guide covers US consumer credit and debit card billing. Official sources were checked on October 26, 2026. Named publishers' amounts and timelines apply to their own services or cards, rather than every free trial.

🚨 Report suspected fraud promptly

If neither you nor an authorized account user made the transaction, contact your issuer immediately through its app or the number on your card. Capital One's pending-transactions guidance distinguishes suspected fraud from an authorized billing problem: do not wait for suspected fraud to post. A renewal you recognize but meant to cancel is a different situation; describe what happened accurately.

Hold or charge? Read the status and the billing record

A $1 line is not automatically harmless, and a full-price line is not automatically a completed subscription payment. Amount is a clue; status and the provider's records are more useful.

For a verification hold that was never collected, the useful request is confirmation of release or reversal, rather than a refund of a completed payment. Do not infer the exact settlement stage from a bank app's wording: ask the merchant and issuer if their records conflict.

Capital One explains that its pending credit-card transactions reduce available credit before being added to the account balance, and do not accrue interest while pending. Debit holds can instead reduce money available for everyday spending. That difference matters even when the merchant has not received a completed payment.

Our refund processing guide explains the broader difference between releasing an authorization and refunding a completed charge. Here, keep your attention on one question: what does this particular trial transaction represent?

Why the pending amount is not always one dollar

Official documentation shows several practices:

If a plan costs $49.99 and the pending line is $49.99, ask whether the processor reserves the plan price. That amount could fit a full-price hold, but does not prove one. Equally, a posted $1 payment needs checking; its small size does not make it a verification hold.

If you cannot find the trial in a store account, use our Google Play billing-owner guide or Apple subscription lookup guide. Identify who bills you before sending a refund request.

⚠️ Check what offer you actually accepted

Read the checkout confirmation, not just the advertisement. A discounted first month with a stated upfront price is a paid offer. Also check eligibility: Spotify, for example, lists prior Premium membership or a prior trial as reasons a customer is ineligible for a free trial. A pending payment can still be processing in either situation; the label does not establish that the offer was free.

How long can the hold last?

Release of a verification hold and posting of a subscription payment are different outcomes. Do not combine their timelines into a single countdown.

Google / YouTubeVisibility of its authorization holds1–14 business days, depending on the bank; contact the bank for information if still pending after 14 business days.
Capital OnePosting of pending credit-card transactionsUsually within 72 hours, sometimes up to 5 days. This is not a deadline for every trial hold to disappear.
CCBillReserved funds after cancellationIts page says funds can remain unavailable for up to 7–10 days after cancellation and that it cannot hasten the process; it does not label those days as business days.

YouTube's 14-business-day contact point is not an instruction to wait that long for another merchant. Follow your own provider's published guidance. Contact the issuer sooner if the amount is unexplained, your available funds are urgently affected, or the merchant and bank give conflicting answers. Ask for the expected release date and what evidence, if any, could help them investigate. A manual release is not guaranteed.

For a follow-up record, note the first-seen date, the merchant's release-confirmation date if supplied, the source of the estimate, and whether the estimate uses calendar or business days. This avoids counting a posting estimate from signup when the support page was discussing a post-cancellation hold.

Canceled the trial but the hold is still there?

Cancellation status and payment status need separate confirmation. First check that you canceled the correct account and plan through the provider that bills it. Save the cancellation email or screenshot, including the effective date and whether another payment remains due.

Then ask about the pending transaction specifically. A reply saying “your subscription is canceled” answers the renewal question; it may not answer whether an authorization was released or a payment was already processing. Likewise, a support agent saying “funds released” does not tell you whether your bank has restored availability yet.

Do not assume every service sends the same reversal message, uses the same bank timer, or can speed up the release. The named sources above document different experiences. If support confirms release, keep its reference and ask your issuer to identify the remaining pending entry.

If the transaction posts, switch to the posted-charge route below. A charge posting after your cancellation date is worth reconciling, but is not by itself proof of an error: compare the original billing date, cancellation cutoff, and effective cancellation date. Those records distinguish a late-appearing payment from billing that violated a timely cancellation.

The hold disappeared — is the subscription canceled?

No cancellation can be inferred from that alone. YouTube explicitly warns: “Your order is not canceled when your authorization hold is released.” A payment check ending is separate from the service's renewal settings.

Open the subscription page and check whether it says it will renew, expire, or has been canceled. If you do not want the paid service, complete cancellation by the provider's own cutoff and retain confirmation. For subscriptions billed by Apple, Apple's cancellation instructions say to cancel a trial at least 24 hours before it ends.

Our subscription cancellation guide covers cancellation routes. The hold's presence, size, or disappearance should not be your reminder system or your evidence of cancellation.

Debit cards: check available money, not just the transaction list

YouTube warns that a debit-card authorization can display as a charge on an online statement and says the bank will reverse that authorization. If the display is unclear, ask the issuer whether the entry is still an authorization or a completed payment.

Here is an illustrative balance calculation, not a bank-account test: $50 available before a $45 hold leaves $5 available, assuming no other activity. If a separate $20 bill arrives, there is a $15 shortfall against that available amount. Whether the bank declines the bill, pays it, or assesses any fee depends on the account and transaction rules.

CCBill warns that its reserved funds can contribute to exceeding account limits or overdrawing an account; it says customers are responsible for issuer-imposed fees. That is CCBill's stated position, not a universal legal allocation or proof that another merchant or bank will refuse assistance.

If money needed for essentials is tied up, contact both sides promptly. Ask the merchant whether release is possible and ask the bank what it can do about availability, pending bills, and any assessed fee. Do not rely on a promised release until the available balance reflects it. A fee waiver or reimbursement is a separate request, with no guaranteed outcome.

Can you dispute a pending charge?

For an authorized credit-card transaction, Chase's education page explains that many issuers wait until posting because a pending amount can change. Capital One's help page likewise tells its cardholders to wait for posting before reporting an authorized transaction problem, then try the merchant before a dispute.

That is not a universal ban on contacting your bank. Chase's dispute page distinguishes its products: credit-card disputes require a posted charge, while pending debit transactions can be raised by phone. Use your own issuer's official contact channel to ask which process applies. Suspected fraud should be reported promptly regardless of status.

For a hold you recognize, the merchant is a useful first contact because it may be able to cancel or reverse the authorization. It cannot promise when your bank will restore availability. The CCBill example also shows why an immediate reversal should not be presented as something every processor can provide.

Try this factual support request, adapting the bracketed fields:

My account shows [trial status and end date]. My issuer shows [merchant descriptor, amount, date] as pending. Is this verification only or a subscription payment being processed? If it is verification only, has it been released, and can you provide the date or reference? Separately, please confirm [whether my trial will renew / my cancellation effective date].

Use the company's authenticated support channel. Keep passwords and full card details out of ordinary email or screenshots; an account or order reference is more useful for this initial explanation.

The charge posted: choose the route from the receipt

A posted charge needs a refund or billing-error inquiry rather than an assumption that a verification hold will disappear. First identify who collected it. An app installed on an iPhone or Android phone does not alone identify the billing provider.

Billing evidenceWhere to startWhat to keep separate
Direct merchant receiptThe merchant's official billing support; ask for correction if terms were violated or a courtesy refund if you missed cancellation.Cancellation stops future renewal according to the terms. It does not itself prove a refund was approved.
Apple purchase receiptApple's Report a Problem refund process, using the Apple Account on the receipt.Apple must assess eligibility. An update on a request and money returning to the card are separate events.
Google Play orderGoogle Play's refund process or the app developer, following the applicable purchase policy.Google Play developers can process refunds. Do not apply Apple's billing route to Google Play.

Direct merchant billing

Contact support promptly, explain whether you missed the cutoff or canceled on time, and attach the relevant confirmation. If you forgot to cancel, ask whether a courtesy refund is available. Do not assume a standard 48-hour grace period or claim you did not use the service unless that is true.

If the amount or timing conflicts with the offer, identify the exact discrepancy: the receipt billed an annual plan rather than the monthly plan you accepted, for example, or billing occurred despite a dated cancellation accepted before the stated cutoff. Ask support to explain the charge and confirm its decision in writing.

Apple and Google Play billing

For Apple, follow the official refund instructions at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple says a pending charge cannot yet be submitted for a refund; try again after receiving the email receipt. Select the reason that accurately describes your situation. If the purchase is missing, check which Apple Account appears on that receipt.

Apple's refund-status guidance says to allow 24–48 hours for an update. That is not a promise that money will return in 48 hours. If approved, a card refund may take up to 30 days to appear on the statement.

For Google Play apps and in-app purchases, including subscriptions, the official purchase policy says a refund may be possible within 48 hours depending on the details; after 48 hours, contact the developer. Google's general policy explicitly says developers can process refunds under their policies and applicable laws. Neither path guarantees approval.

Our digital purchase refund guide covers the wider store workflows. Cancel future renewal separately through the confirmed billing provider.

If an error remains unresolved

Ask your card issuer about dispute eligibility and deadlines while keeping your support correspondence. Do not let prolonged merchant discussions run past the issuer's reporting requirements. A forgotten cancellation and billing contrary to documented trial terms are different claims; present the evidence accurately. Our credit card chargeback guide covers that next stage.

⚠️ Track refunds and disputes together

If you have an open dispute and the merchant agrees to refund, tell your issuer and follow its instructions. Keep any provisional credit separate from the merchant refund in your records. Our guide to refunds arriving during a card dispute explains why temporary credits can later be reversed.

Worked troubleshooting scenarios

These are hypothetical examples of using the worksheet, not customer experiences or tested bank outcomes.

A $14.99 pending line on day two of a 14-day trial

Your issuer says pending and the merchant dashboard still shows 12 trial days remaining. The full-price amount could be a verification hold, but the two labels do not establish that on their own. Save the offer and ask support whether it is verification only. If support confirms a hold, monitor it against the guidance for that service. If it identifies a payment, ask why it is billing during the trial. Cancel by the actual cutoff if you do not want to continue.

A $1 hold four days after cancellation

You canceled a streaming trial on Tuesday and still see a pending $1 line on Saturday. Match the confirmation to the same account and plan first. If it confirms timely cancellation, ask support whether the authorization was released, then ask the issuer about the remaining entry if needed. A debit cash shortage is a reason to contact them now; do not impose YouTube's waiting period on an unrelated streaming service. If the line posts, preserve the original dates and investigate the completed charge.

A $59.99 Apple-billed charge after the trial ended

The Apple receipt identifies an annual subscription and the card transaction is posted. If you simply forgot to cancel, stop the next renewal and submit an accurate refund request through Apple. If you have evidence of timely cancellation, include that in the inquiry instead. Record request status separately from money received. A denied refund for a renewal you agreed to does not by itself establish a card billing error.

Frequently asked questions

Does pending mean the trial was definitely free?

No. Pending describes transaction progress, not eligibility or price. Compare the checkout confirmation, the active plan, and the receipt. A verification hold is one possibility; a paid offer or subscription payment still processing is another.

Should I wait for a refund entry when a hold disappears?

Not necessarily. If the authorization was released without becoming a completed payment, there may be no separate refund credit. Check whether availability recovered and whether any matching posted charge exists. Ask the issuer if the display is unclear.

Can I call the bank before its published waiting period ends?

Yes. Asking what a transaction means is different from filing a dispute. Contact the issuer promptly for suspected fraud, urgent availability problems, or conflicting records. Whether it can remove a hold or accept a pending dispute depends on its procedures and your card type.

Is a posted charge after cancellation always wrong?

No. Compare when billing began with the cutoff and the effective cancellation date. Send proof if the provider accepted cancellation before the applicable deadline. If you canceled after billing, ask about refund eligibility rather than assuming cancellation erased that payment.

What should I keep after support says the issue is resolved?

Keep the cancellation confirmation, any release or refund reference, and your final reconciliation: hold gone with funds available, or posted charge matched to a refund. Check the subscription's renewal status separately. One support message may resolve only one of those questions.
